Red light therapy is light delivered at specific wavelengths, close to the red end of what the eye can see. It has been used in dermatology and sports medicine for years, and it's now appearing in fitness studios. You may also see it called photobiomodulation or low level light therapy.
Our mats emit at two wavelengths. 660 nanometres is visible red, absorbed nearer the surface of the skin. 850 nanometres is near infrared, invisible to the eye, and reaches deeper into tissue. Both are produced by LEDs set into the mat itself.
The light is not a treatment and it is not medical. It's a feature of the room you're working in, and you receive it simply by being on the mat.

Why red light,
and why now.
Why red light,
and why now.
What's new is not the light. It's bringing it into a class, so that movement and recovery happen in the same forty-five minutes rather than in two appointments on two different days.
It is being studied for its potential role in muscle recovery, skin health and cellular function, and that research is active and growing.
What you get here is specific and easy to check. Both wavelengths, on while you work, on a mat of your own. The rest is easier to feel than to explain.

Is this hot Pilates?
Is this hot Pilates?
Yes, and a little more. Every class here is Hot Pilates or Hot Barre, taught in a room at 40 degrees. Most of them also use red light mats. The heat comes from the room. The light comes from the mat. They are two separate things happening at the same time.

The heat, from the room

Infrared heaters on the wall take the studio to 40 degrees. Heat warms muscle, so you move more easily and the work gets harder. You will sweat. This is the part you feel the moment you walk in.

LEDs built into the mat, at 660 and 850 nanometres. The room's heat comes from the wall heaters. The mat gives off a little warmth of its own, but the light isn't something you feel working. This is the part you barely notice while it is happening.

The heat is on throughout. The light runs for the working part of the class, either side of the warm up and cool down. A few classes each week are taught without the mats, and the timetable shows which.

The mat glows red beneath you while you work. The infrared heaters have already taken the room to 40 degrees before you walk in. You do nothing differently to receive either. No goggles, no settings, no separate appointment.

Pilates and barre, taught slowly and precisely. With eight in the room there's time for everyone, so corrections come quietly and nobody is made an example of.
